General Werner Transportation Info & Facts

Werner Enterprise Inc. is a truckload motor carrier of general commodities in both interstate and intrastate commerce.  Werner Transportation is among the five largest truckload carriers in the United States and maintains its headquarters in Omaha, Nebraska, near the center of its service area with service terminals throughout the country. The company operates throughout the 48 contiguous states and also portions of Canada and provides through trailer service in and out of Mexico.

  • Werner was founded in 1956 by Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Clarence L. Werner, who started the business with one truck at the age of 19.
  • Werner completed its initial public offering in April 1986 with a fleet of 630 trucks.
  • At March 31, 2004, the fleet consisted of 8,425 tractors, over 22,960 trailers and over 13,000 employees and independent contractors

The principal types of freight transported include consumer products, retail store merchandise, food and paper products, beverages, industrial products and building materials.

History Timeline

  • 1956 - Founded by CL Werner with one truck.
  • 1960s - Terminal built in Council Bluffs.
  • 1965 - Werner Enterprises had a fleet of 10 trucks offering personal and high quality service.
  • 1969 - Werner picked blue color for it's trucks, with purchase of a 1969 Freightliner. Company logo was developed shortly later.
  • 1970 - 35-40 trucks flatbeds with removable sides, hauled grain, soybean meal, lumber, potatoes, onions.
  • 1971 - Werner got the first 7 van trailers, hops trailers and painted a dark blue.
  • 1977 - Werner Enterprises moves from Council Bluffs, IA to Omaha, NE. and builds a 30,000 square foot terminal on 5 acres. The company had a fleet of 100 trucks.
  • 1981 - Computers used in the office for the first time.
  • 1986 - Werner completed its initial public offering in April 1986 with a fleet of 630 trucks.
  • 1992 - Installed satellite communications on trucks. Temperature Controlled Division formed.
  • 1995 - Paperless Log Initiative.
  • 1998 - June, Paperless log system approved by DOT.
  • 1999 - Exceeded growth goal of over 7,000 trucks,18,000 trailers, 8,500 drivers and exceeded $1 billion in revenue .
  • 2000 - January, started Mexico operations.
  • 2001 - February, Werner opens new 18,240 sq ft Driver Training center housing the Millennium Driver Trainer System (simulator) and Computer Base Training at Corporate Office in Omaha, Ne.

  • Werner has received Distribution Magazines Quest for Quality Carrier award 6 times in last 7 years.
  • Werner has received numerous "Carrier of the Year " awards from many Fortune 500 companies.
  • Forbes ASAP Magazine - August 1998 issue, Werner was named one of "America's Best Technology Users." No other trucking company earned this award.
  • Computer World magazine named Werner as one of the "Top 100 Companies Utilizing Information Technology"
  • 1999 ATA Sales & marketing Council Communication Award - 1st place Computer World magazine named Werner as one of the "Top 100 companies Utilizing Information Technology"
  • For 2nd time in history, a Werner driver, Jeff Kreutztrager, was named captain of the American Trucking Associations - America's Road Team
